2009 Lifetime Tennis Award |
Lisa Ann (Foster) Whitescarver was awarded the 2009 Tennis Achievement Award by SWAT for all of her contributions to the local tennis community, shortly before she passed away on August 3, 2009. Tennis was a very active part of Lisa’s life. Lisa was a member of the USTA, as well as SWAT, including terms as President and Vice- President of the local group. She was the initial Scholarship Committee Chairperson and for several years, she was the Director of the National Junior Tennis League. “Tuesday Night Tennis” was her brainchild. She was a highly successful coach, guiding her 1989 Fort Defiance High School girls’ team to an AA State Championship, as well as having several individual state champions. She was an accomplished player herself, winning several local tournaments in Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Lisa will be sorely missed by all her friends at SWAT. Those desiring to make memorial contributions may do so to the Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah, 64 Sports Medicine Drive, Fishersville, Va. 22939 or the Clymore PTA, reference the Lisa Whitescarver Fund, attn: Jen Landes, 151 Tanner Lane, Weyers Cave, VA. 24486. | ||

2005 Lifetime Tennis Award |
Tricia Opie, 2005 President of SWAT, presents the SWAT Lifetime Tennis Award to Tom Erskine for his many years of leadership and dedication to the Staunton Tennis Association (now SWAT). Tom has been involved with the tennis association since receiving a letter from Frank Pancake in 1974 inviting people who were interested in tennis to attend a meeting at Mary Baldwin College. Tom has been a leader in promoting tennis in the area for over 30 years. Tom has been instrumental in getting courts upgraded and getting additional courts built in the area. He has also been the chairman of the committee for the annual city tournament (now the AMC/SWAT/Leader tournament) for many years. Pat Austin, who served as director of the tournament for years, says that “Tom is the most honest and decent person I have ever known. His primary concern is for other human beings. It is always a pleasure and an honor to work with Tom.” Jim Kivlighan, who has known Tom, played tennis with him for years, and worked closely with him on the tournament thinks of Tom as “Mr. Tennis of Staunton.” Jim also said Tom is always willing and eager to play with new players and gives everyone encouragement. Tom was recognized in 1992 by the Virginia Tennis Association as the statewide “Volunteer of the Year”. For 20 years he assisted Lois Blackburn in running the USTA sanctioned Buddy Dey Invitational Tournament in Staunton. In 1994 Tom won the coveted Sammy Wright Trophy for accumulating the most points in the adult divisions of the AMC/SWAT/LeaderTournament. We congratulate Tom on being presented this award and
recognize him for his dedication and many accomplishments! ![]()
