Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library Tournament |
||
| The 2006 Woodrow Wilson Presidential
Library
Tennis Tournament was a big success, showcasing excellent tennis and
raising substantial funds for the educational programs of the Woodrow
Wilson Presidential Library. Held in June at Mary Baldwin
College, the tournament crowned main draw and consolation champions in
mixed doubles, women's doubles, and men's doubles. In
addition to
the tennis, the players and their guests attended a pre-tournament
reception at the home of Don and Patsy Wilson. In the mixed doubles main draw, Michele Jones and Wray Sherman defeated Myriam Escanellas and Ryan McLane for the championship. Despite the loss, Myriam and Ryan ended up winning recognition for playing the most matches throughout the weekend. In the consolation bracket, Rebekka Siron and Chad Reed defeated Shawnte Woodson and Chris Scott. In the women's doubles championship, Britani Miller and Rebekka Siron defeated Kit Carter and Anne Carter Smith in one of the best matches of the tournament. Kit Carter, competing at age 83, proved to be a crowd favorite, as she has been since winning the women's singles championship in the Staunton Tennis Open in 1938. In the consolation bracket, Myriam Escanellas and Dawn Rhodus defeated Pat Dewan and Cheryl Matthews. In the men's doubles main draw, John Raker and Chad Reed defeated Hardy Dawkins and Danny Leech for the title. It was an honor that John competed in the tournament, because, later in the summer, he was featured in Tennis Magazine providing tennis tips with fellow top professionals from around the country. In the consolation bracket, Ryan McLane and Bill Rodgers defeated Brian Renne and Eric Renne. The Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport and E-N Computers sponsored the tournament. Tom Erskine ran the tournament on behalf of SWAT, Shenandoah Spring Water provided the water, and Lifetime Center at AMC provided logistical support and a rain site. This tournament was slightly different from other tournaments, because each team was entitled to use three “Kivlighans” in each match to replay a point. In addition to the good tennis, the sponsorships, the entry fees, and the purchase of the Kivlighans gave a substantial boost to the educational mission of the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library.
