2006 Scholarship Winners

SWAT tennis announces the 2006 Judith Fisher Memorial Scholarship recipients. This year's winners were Mary Anne Thompson, daughter of Dr. Robert and Mrs. Patricia Thompson, of Waynesboro, VA, and Ryan Bugas, son of Paul and Ruth Bugas, of Staunton, VA.

Mary Anne graduated from Wilson Memorial High school where she played # 1 on the team for 4 years,won several Singles Tournaments in the Shenandoah District, is the reigning district singles champion, and has won and advanced in many VHSL tournaments in doubles and singles over her career.  She was awarded the AMC Daily News Leader Tournament SWAT Junior Sportsmanship Award in 2002, and has participated in NJTL. She either won or advanced in divisions of the Cancer Society Tournament, Daily News Record Tournament, Rally in the Valley, and the AMC Lifetime Tournament. Mary Anne has worked with area youth in NJTL and has helped local pros to teach tennis for youth in summer and winter clinics. She will continue her love for the sport and will attend the College of Charleston in South Carolina. Mary Anne excelled academically at Wilson with a GPA of 4.048,and her academic performance won Mary Anne the College of Charleston's Presidential Academic Scholarship.

Ryan graduated from Ft. Defiance High School, where he played # 1 in singles and doubles Boy's Tennis and was the Team Captain. Throughout his career, Ryan has particiated in NJTL and helped to coach youth in clinics during the summer. He has participated and won events in area tournaments, such as The AMC/Daily News Leader Tournament 2005 18 and under Doubles Championship, Rally in the Valley Doubles Winner, 2004, and was selected by the News Leader as the Student Athlete of the Week in 2005. Ryan is academically # 1 in his class of 194, and was selected early to attend the University of Virginia. He plans to pursue a career in Medicine at Duke or Johns Hopkins after he graduates. Ryan's Coach, Erin Walker says " Ryan has a tremendous future ahead of him, and I excited about his potential."
