Century Tournament 2007

May 25, 2007--Led by the mixed doubles championship team of Lisa Whitescarver and Tom Erskine, area tennis players won several titles at the 5th Annual Century Tournament, held May 19-20 at Spotswood Country Club in Harrisonburg.  Whitescarver and Erskine did not lose a set in the tournament, beating Hope Oakes of Harrisonburg and Bruce Bontz of McGaheysville 6-1, 6-4 in the final.  The Century Tournament, a double's tournament in which the combined age of the partners must be at least 100 years, was sponsored by Rockingham Heritage Bank and the Staunton Waynesboro Augusta Tennis Association (SWAT).  Spotswood Tennis Professional John Raker directed the tournament.

Gloria Armentrout of Waynesboro and Carol Williams of Staunton finished as the runners-up in the women's doubles division.  Sue McCoy of Lexington and Sally LaBella of Annapolis, Maryland, won the women's doubles title.  In the men's doubles division, Bill Story and Craig Westwood dominated the field, losing a total of only three games in the winning the title.  They defeated Bruce Bontz and Chris Brock of Harrisonburg in the final.

Area residents also did well in the consolation divisions.  Staunton resident Anita Sowers took home two crowns.  She teamed with her aunt-in-law, Nancy Sowers of Harrisonburg, to win the consolation women's doubles crown.  She also teamed with her uncle-in-law, John Sowers of Harrisonburg, to win the consolation mixed double's crown.  Lou Hock of Waynesboro and William Browning of Staunton won the consolation men's doubles crown.  Hock won the unofficial ironman title, playing in seven matches in two days.
