The Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta,Tennis Association (SWAT) has established a scholarship at Fort Defiance High School in memory of Lisa Foster Whitescarver who passed away August 3, 2009 after a courageous battle with colon and liver cancer at age 48. She taught kindergarten in Augusta County for 27 years. She began her teaching career at Weyers Cave Elementary School and when it closed, she moved to Clymore Elementary School where she was named 2009 Teacher of the Year.
Lisa was born on Oct 1, 1960 in Charleston, WV, the daughter of Melvin and Ida Foster and she had three sisters, Sarah, Gretchen and Molly. The family moved to Staunton in 1973 when her father was transferred to Smith Transfer in Verona.
Lisa graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1978. She was an A Honor Roll student and participated in the Marching and Symphonic Bands, as well as played basketball and competed in track and field each Spring.
After graduation, Lisa went to Bridgewater College where she continued her academic success and played volleyball for the Eagles. She was a member of the Women's Athletic Association. It is at this point in her life that she picked up the sport of tennis, her true athletic passion. She graduated from Bridgewater College in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and wanted to become an elementary school teacher.
Teaching was her true passion and she helped hundreds of children get started on the right foot in their educational lives.
She was able to combine her love of tennis and teaching others by serving as the coach of the girl's tennis team at Fort Defiance High School. In 1989 the team won the state championship, in 1990 and 1991 the doubles team, Anne Carter Coffman and Marsha Houff, won the state doubles championship. Anne Carter Coffman also won the state singles champoinship in 1991.
Lisa was a member of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and served on the board of directors of SWAT where she served terms as president and vice president. She was the first chairman of the Judith Fisher Memorial Scholarship which awards $ 1,000 each year to two area high school seniors. She was also the director of the local Staunton NJTL (National Junior Tennis League) for several summers.
She was instrumental in starting the Tuesday Night Tennis program which is held for 8 weeks during the summer. This program offers players of all levels free instruction by area professionals on local public courts. This program is organized by SWAT and funded by area Edward Jones Investment Representatives.
Lisa was an accomplished player, winning several local tournaments in women's doubles and mixed doubles. She was awarded the prestigous SWAT Lifetime Tennis Award in 2009 for her
many contributions to tennis. Lisa brought graciousness and class to all that she attempted and was an excellent role model to all of those whose lives she touched.
The award SWAT has established to honor Lisa will be given annually to two graduating seniors at Fort Defiance High School who exhibit qualities of determination and sportsmanship in all endeavors, be gracious in winning, humble in victory and be committed to responsible academic effort.
