2006 was the 60th consecutive year for this tournament. It was held from Sunday, July 30 through Saturday, August 5 at the Mary Baldwin and Robert E. Lee High School tennis courts. The tournament was directed by Jim Kivlighan (adult division), assisted by Dick Lotts, and Chad Reed (junior division). The 60th tournament featured torrid temperatures near 100o degrees several days, large tournament draws--53 singles and 53 doubles entries, and very competitive matches. The tournament committee consisted of Bev Coffman, Chad Reed, Hardy Dawkins, Jim Kivlighan, Dick Lotts, and chairman, Tom Erskine. In the Men's Open, Jim Hill won the men's singles and the Buddy Dey Trophy for his fifth consecutive year. Jim defeated Wray Sherman in a hard hitting 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 match. Jim and Chad Reed won their fifth consecutive Mens Doubles championships by defeating Wray and Hardy Dawkins 7-5, 6-4. There were 18 men vying for the singles title this year and 20 men's doubles teams. Click here for a News Leader article about the finals.

Jim Hill and Chad Reed, five-time Men's Doubles Champions On the women's side, Michelle Jones was a repeat winner, taking her second consecutive Women's Singles and the Mabel Kivlighan Trophy by besting Lori Hillman 6-2, 6-3. The Women's Doubles title went to Lori and Rebekah Siron who topped Michelle and Rhonda Shinnaberry 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. There were nine women in the singles draw and six teams in the doubles. The Mixed Doubles title went to Wray Sherman and Lori Hillman who defeated Jim and Kay Hill 6-4, 6-1. The Mixed draw was the largest of the tournament with 23 teams vying for the title.The Frank Pancake Trophy for accumulating the most points in the tournament was a tie between Lori Hillman and Jim Hill, both of whom had two championships and one runner-up. The Men's 35 champion was William Browning who posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Andrew MacKenzie. The Men's 45 singles title went to Hardy Dawkins who beat Glenn Deputy 6-3, 6-2. This was Hardy's second straight title in this division. In the Men's 45 Doubles championship match, Lou Hock and Jim Kivlighan bested Phil Hartzler and George Carney 6-3, 7-5. The Men's 55 singles champion was Danny Leech who beat Ed Leavell 6-1, 4-6, 6-0. The Mixed 45 champions were Lisa Moore and Lou Hock who defeated Gloria Armentrout and Rogers 6-0, 7-5 The Women's 40 Doubles title went to Pat Dewan and Cheryl Matthews who defeated Gloria Armentrout and Kit Carter 7-5, 6-3. The Men's 55 doubles champions were Lou Hock and Jim Kivlighan. The Junior Tournament also featured a large draw with 54 players participating.At the conclusion of the tournament, Tricia and Evarts
Opie
hosted a party celebrating the 60th tournament and
SWAT's
successful year. Beverley Carter Coffman was presented the SWAT
Lifetime Tennis Award by Tom Erskine for her
many contributions to
promoting tennis as a coach, player and former SWAT president
and
board member. Kit Carter gave a history of tennis in Staunton and
mentioned many people who had been involved in tennis over the
years. |
